Pumice is volcanic rock. It forms when lava cools so fast that the gas stays trapped inside, which is what gives it all those little holes and makes it light enough to float. Those holes are also what make it work on your feet.
Run it over damp skin and it takes off the hard, dry build up on heels and the balls of your feet. Gentler than a metal foot file, and it won't leave your skin feeling stripped.
How to use it
Soak your feet first. Ten minutes in warm water does it, and a magnesium foot soak tablet makes it a nicer job. Softened skin comes away far more easily than dry skin.
Wet the stone, then work it over the rough patches in small circles. Light pressure, and stop once the skin feels smooth rather than trying to get it all in one go. Callus builds up over months, so it comes off over a few sessions.
Follow with a moisturiser while your feet are still damp.
Worth knowing
Don't use it on broken, cracked or irritated skin, and take care if you have reduced feeling in your feet. If you're diabetic, have a word with your doctor or podiatrist before using a pumice stone or foot file.
Looking after it
Rinse it under the tap after each use and hang it up by the rope to dry. It's porous, so it holds water, and hanging it is what stops it staying damp and going off.
Every stone is a little different. Colour and hole size vary because it came out of a volcano rather than a mould.
