Essential oils should always be used with caution around pets. Cats and birds are generally more sensitive to airborne oils than humans, and some oils are associated with higher risk, especially if ingested, applied directly or used in high concentration.
Oils more commonly linked to sensitivity concerns include tea tree, wintergreen, pine, cinnamon, clove, oregano, thyme, eucalyptus and concentrated citrus oils.
Some oils, such as lavender, chamomile and frankincense, are often regarded as milder when diffused in well ventilated spaces. However, no essential oil can be considered universally safe for all animals.
If you have pets, especially cats or birds, use essential oils in a well ventilated area, avoid direct contact, and monitor your pet’s behaviour. If unsure, consult a qualified veterinarian before use.
